apparently you can query whether the screen is locked with org.freedesktop.login1.Session LockedHint according to the docs.
it would be great if that would be implemented so that you can set idle to true when the screen is locked.

Would it make much difference? The screen is nearly always locked after some time of inactivity, which is similar or can be made equal to awatcher's idle time setting. Also, it seems to be tied to systemd which is in most but not all environments.
I agree that it might be more precise to mark idle on screen lock even unconditionally, but possibly lower priority at this moment, I'll look into what's involved to be added.
