Connectable blocks

Fences and stairs in Minecraft have a different hitbox and texture if they are next to another block they can connect to. It would be neat to be able to create blocks like this which have different states that they can assume depending on their neighbours.

I imagine this being most useful for custom stairs, roofs, walls, chains... frankly the applications are endless.

For what? You can build 2 different blocks and combine them.
