Get latest commit hash for a repo

I am trying to figure out how to use gix library to get the latest commit hash for a given repository. There is a ton of docs but it seems that none of them help you figure out how to simply connect to a repo.

Is there a simple way to connect to a repo and get the latest commit hash? I'm looking at docs in gix-transport, gix-protocol, and gix but cannot seem to figure this deceptively simple task out.

The entrypoint for gitoxide is the gix crate - everything else is plumbing which one would want to avoid, particularly if it's related to cloning as there is a lot of intricacies that gix handles for you.

For cloning a repository, prepare_clone_bare() is how to get started. That yields a repository instance which has a head_id() method to get the latest commit hash.

To achieve all that without a prior clone, one will have to use the API of the forges directly.
