I saw that a branch by the name forge/1.12.2 exists. It seems to be considerably older than the interaction here. Is that branch functional?

The branch works but the version is very outdated. The version is before automatic detection using DNS entries for example.

To be honest, the older Minecraft version's code is quite poor, and I genuinely dislike working with it. As a result, I don't believe I'll ever find the motivation to port the Java 21 mod back to Java 8. Additionally, I suspect this old version may not even be downloadable anymore since it's practically an entirely different mod. You'd be better off just running Cloudflared directly. If anyone does feel motivated to take this on, please feel free to submit a pull request.
