Apple M1 chip

Hi all,

I am trying to install the OSIRIS pipeline on my laptop (macOS Big Sur with Apple M1 chip) but I'm having some issues. When running 'make test' I get the 'Wrong Architecture Error' described in the INSTALLPROBLEMS.md file. My issue seems to be that my IDL 8.8.1 installation has an x86_64 architecture while both the cfitsio library and libosiris have arm64. Do you have any suggestions on how to solve this issue? Maybe from some users who are using an Apple M1 chip as well?

Hi Sandra,

Based on what I've seen, I don't think IDL has a native M1 version yet. I think the way forward is to build cfitsio and libosiris for x86_64. I have not done this yet, but at compile time, there should be a way to specify the desired architecture (x86_64). I'll ask around.

Update:

It may be worth trying to recompile CFITSIO and the OSIRIS DRP in x86_64 mode by adding this line to all of the Makefiles:

CFLAGS += -arch x86_64

This requires a previous definition of CFLAGS in the Makefile.

Thank you! The pipeline is working now. For those with a similar setup this is what I had to do:

• Install CFITSIO for x86_64. I use Macports and had to install libgcc-devel first and then CFITSIO, since installing CFITSIO with libgcc-devel failed:
  arch -x86_64 sudo port install libgcc-devel
  arch -x86_64 sudo port install cfitsio

• I then updated the CFLAGS in the Makefile as suggested by Jim, but had to update the CFLAGS_SHARED as well.

Thanks siraimundo for the suggestion about updating the variables the CFLAGS_SHARED as well，It makes me successfully compile the pipeline without "ErrorHandler - -370".

By the way, the following command does not work for me
arch -x86_64 sudo port install libgcc-devel
arch -x86_64 sudo port install cfitsio

Then I use:
arch -x86_64 sudo port install libgcc-devel +universal
arch -x86_64 sudo port install cfitsio +universal
And It does work.

Hi there - I'm trying to install the DRP with the apple M2 Max chip. I've tried the above work arounds but I am still getting Error 373 and compatibility issues when I run_odrp. I'm wondering if anyone has succeeded with the M2 chip - maybe I'm missing a step?

It seems that as of IDL v9.0, IDL runs natively on Apple silicon Macs: https://www.nv5geospatialsoftware.com/docs/WhatsNew.html

I'm running IDL 8.9, not 9.0. Are you saying the above workarounds should be sufficient? Or should I be upgrading to 9.0 and NOT compiling CFITSIO and OsirisDRP for x86_64 mode? Thanks for your help!

Hi Tracy, The above workarounds allowed others to compile the DRP on Apple silicon processors. Can you provide more of the error message that you see please? If you do move to IDL9, you would not compile CFITSIO or OsirisDRP in x86_64 mode. I don't know if anyone has done that. thanks, jim Jim Lyke W. M.
