Multiplayer Inoperative

The setup ran fine and game runs fine with one exception. When clicking 'Join Game' I receive this error message:
You need to be logged in with a user account in order to be able to join an online session.
Could this be related to my Linux/Proton/Patch setup?

Also, I just noticed that Space Engineers complains that Steam is in offline mode when it's not. I tried cycling Steam offline and back online and I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Steam based on a suggestion from another user. None of these made a difference.

I have not had an issue connecting to a multiplayer server.

I started SE, clicked to join multiplayer and closed the game. Here is the log file...

The only thing that stands out in your log is this:
Steamworks is not initialized.
So my best guess is that steam is not reachable via space engineers somehow. I am not very good at networking or steam for that matter.

am having the same problem, found the same "Steamworks is not initialized." thing in my log file

Yeah sorry, that was supposed to link to here:

Its the main proton thread for space engineers, many people there are much better at fixing the game then I am.

Just so you know, I had to downgrade proton to install dotnet48, and then this problem happened to me. By upgrading proton back to 6.3 it appears to have fixed the issue as it no longer displays the error.
