Consider using alternative diagram renders

For clarity I think that the diagrams could use a more modern charting software.

I love ascii as much as the next guy but it is hard to parse sometimes, and even more cumbersome to edit, plus it might give us an opportunity to avoid questions like those in #3

Some alternatives I have used in the past.
