I'm pretty sure those are JPEG compression artifacts. The pattern is appearing in the low-frequency part of the image and is more apparent in the flatter sections. This Wikipedia article describes it pretty nicely. My first reaction is that this seems pretty minor compared to other flightsim imagery issues. Maybe a higher ZL would help? Or maybe a different satellite imagery provide that may compress their JPEGs differently? And yes, maybe there are filters that could be applied to take some of this out, but as you suspect, AO is already pretty heavy on the CPU. |

Often tiles show a sort of regular pattern superimposed on the "true" image. I wonder if it can be removed by some treatment. I think FFT could do the trick given the highly regular character of the pattern but I suppose it's too CPU intensive ?
