When I initially left Alinto and forked MailCleaner, it was my intention to get a port of MailCleaner out for the latest version of Debian with minimal changes and then to move on to a simpler, more sustainable hard-fork described here. Because of this, I named the projects with the intention that the direct MailCleaner successor would quickly loose focus/mindshare in favour of the simpler fork. This is why I have currently given the flagship name to the future fork, "SpamTagger", and a modified name to the direct MailCleaner successor, "SpamTagger Plus".
As time has gone on, I've invested way more time than I had expected to change several core components of the MailCleaner successor (especially the move to Bootc for building and distribution of appliance images). This should make future maintenance much simpler, to the point that I'm much more confident that the MailCleaner successor project will be a viable product for the long term.
It has also struck me that even if the simplified product one day sees much wider deployment, most of this will likely be because of the potential to be embedded within another suite of applications, so most users will never see the name.
The simplified product will also not likely see a release until years after the MailCleaner successor does, so it would seem strange to have a "SpamTagger Plus" product available while no "SpamTagger" product exists.
Finally "SpamTagger Plus" carries the implication that it is the premium, potentially commercial product. It is my intention that both products always remain free and that the simplified product is at least as "premium". Any commercial component for either product will be on the basis of support contracts and affiliate licensing deals for add-ons.
For these reasons, I'm considering changing the naming so that the MailCleaner successor (currently "SpamTagger Plus") is given the flagship name of "SpamTagger", and the future simplified product (currently "SpamTagger") is given a name like "SpamTagger Core".
Given that neither product has seen a release, this is the time to make that change! Let me know what you think.
