Handling unbound dates

Perhaps I'm just missing it but I don't see a way to handle using datepicker_input for an unbound (not model field) date.  

For example, you can use text_field_tag without supplying a model instance, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to do that with datepicker.

If it's in fact possible can someone show me the light?
