Adapting to other ESRI Geocoding Services

Thank you for this great bit of code. I'm trying to adapt this code to access a public statewide locator at: https://geodata.md.gov/imap/rest/services/GeocodeServices/MD_CompositeLocator/GeocodeServer

But, the content() function produces an error:

process and parse

res <- content(req, "parsed", "application/json")

Error message:
Error: lexical error: invalid char in json text.

(right here) ------^

Any ideas why? It looks like some of the symbols arent converted over?
