App routinely lags when switching back to the tab

I'm not sure what happens and my react isn't really good enough to investigate but I suspect either 1) Some state re-rendering shenanigans (which we can probably use the react dev tools to diagnose) or 2) The service worker is naughty, in which case this will probably never be resolved
