Feature request: Close file without closing the view

Right now, if you have a split view with 2+ files open next to each other you only have the option to press Ctrl+W to close a file, but that closes the split too.
I would like to keep the split when closing the file and let the remaining split show either another open file if there are any, or just mirror the only one that is open.
