Currently there's only a collective spannheight field for the timeline that can be set, and is shared by all event-spans, but I have thought about it in the past to change it - so that the spannheight is a field not on the timeline, but on the event-spann itself.

That's the solution I think of immediately at least.

Exactly! Obviously offsetable to both axes, but looks great.

Maybe one more thing that would be pretty cool is specifying the height of the event's "line" (so it can expand more above/below) if that is not possible already.

I've just added it on the local branch, the example below is just to show what can be set now through the new fields.

To make it look good (or better), one just has to dial in the fields. I would still recommend to keep the eventspan text and event text on separate sides of the timeline, rather than mixing them up, as can be seen with "Taxation on sheep begin".

It will probably take a little bit of time for the typst universe repo to merge the PR with the update, so if you want it now you can fork the repo and checkout the "1.0.0-prerelease" branch, and place it in the (OS-dependent) directory for local packages.

On linux it would be at ~/.local/share/typst/packages/local/herodot/1.0.0

I've submitted the update with a PR to the upstream, so it should land in @preview in the not so far future.
