Opening app on Mac Sonoma

Trying to open the java file on a Macbook Pro Sonoma 14.8.1 and not making any headway:

with the terminal command:

and I get no response with the built-in Mac java launcher either. My java version is build 1.8.0_481-b10.

Sorry for the delayed response! I was also unable to run with Oracle JDK 8_u481, though my error message was different. It looks like this is related to recent changes with JavaFX. It's apparently been removed from Java 8 as of version 8_u451.

Try installing a JRE that's either older than version 8_u450 or newer than version 11. I was able to run it with Oracle JDK 25.0.2. You can't get it from java.com, though – you have to go to oracle.com. Then you'll also have to download JavaFX and include it on the command line as a module (see the readme).

It turns out there are other Java 8 distributions that still contain JavaFX. I updated the readme with links to those distributions, so if you follow the new instructions, it should hopefully just work. I'm going to close for now, but let me know if that still doesn't work for you.

Hello, this definitely helped me get closer - I pulled the JRE JavaFX from the page you added and unzipped it:

However I still get an error when I run the following:

java --module-path '/Users/ChurchillC/Utilities/java/zulu25.32.21-ca-fx-jre25.0.2-macosx_x64/lib' --add-modules javafx.controls,javafx.swing -jar MapDesignerRaster.jar

Ah, that's a JRE with JavaFX bundled, so you shouldn't need the module path` stuff. Does it work if you just call Java without any module arguments?

java -jar MapDesignerRaster.jar

Oh, and you'll need to add that zulu25.32.21-ca-fx-jre25.0.2-macosx_x64 folder to your path. I'd recommend deleting the 1.8.0_481 installation if you haven't already, to make sure it doesn't try to use that one. When you run java -version, you should see "25.0.2", not "1.8.0".
