Explain how federation works in simple terms

Hello,

Every people i attempted to convince to join mastodon gave me the same answer: it's too complicated. At every try, these people were not able to comprehend how federation worked and thought that they could only communicate with people on the same server as temps, even after i explained that's not the case. Someone explained to me that emails was a good metaphor, i think you should use it to explain this on joinmastodon's main page.

Thanks for the suggestion. A revamp of some of our messaging for the joinmastodon.org page is being considered, so I will add this to the list of ideas.
