Description
I’d like to submit a feature request regarding support for HEIC/HEIF images in the web gallery.
Currently, HEIC/HEIF photos uploaded to MEGA (from PC, phone, or other devices) do not display properly in the web gallery. Instead of generating thumbnails and allowing fullscreen viewing like JPEG files, they appear only as downloadable files. This limits the user experience—especially when sharing folders with friends—since these photos cannot be previewed directly in the browser.
To clarify:
- The issue is not limited to Camera Uploads. It affects all HEIC/HEIF files uploaded from any source.
- Thumbnails are not generated for these files in the web gallery or in the mobile app.
- In fullscreen mode, HEIC/HEIF files are not displayed at all, even though they are present in the folder.
Since HEIC/HEIF is quickly becoming the default format on smartphones, implementing support for direct in-gallery viewing (with thumbnails and fullscreen display) would make MEGA’s photo experience much more seamless and competitive with other cloud services such as iCloud and OneDrive.
