Cancelling area selection screenshot with escape creates empty image file

Whenever I run maim with -s to select an area to screenshot, but then I cancel it for whatever reason by pressing escape, the rest of my command for this runs and saves an "empty" .png file to my screenshots directory and copies the same file to my clipboard. Is there any way to just kill maim when you cancel the screenshot so that a bad file isn't saved and copied to clipboard?

It is probably because you are running the tee command, like this:
maim -us | tee "$filename" | xclip -selection clipboard -t image/png

Instead you can run:
maim -us "$filename" && xclip -selection clipboard -t image/png "$filename"
