Strong coordinator helps; facilitator who can manage conflicts
ODD protocol example
Managing the issue of authority: allow people to take initiative; listen to feedback; clarify when something is a suggestion that's open to discussion.
Are journal editors aware of standards? Will reviewers expect it? Is the default expectation to adhere to standards?
Partly about PR and engagement: standard as a suggestion, with encouragement.
Rewards/incentives for participation are critical. Problem that academic departments/unis don't care about research admin / service. Hard to attribute outcomes / give credit (what grants/pubs come of it?). Need to create a reward/recognition system.
Reach out to leaders of the GLP (Global Land Project) working groups for advice.
Have leader who has time (avoid senior people who are too busy).
Webinars: people listen because they learn something.
Engage early career folks; helpful to have publications as product for incentive.
Incentive side may be most important. Economics: contribution to public good is always difficult to encourage.
Convince uni's that these things are really important (potentially good optics).
Similar challenge in private sector: groups lack incentives to contribution to data warehouse; need high-level management support.
Idea of an NAS Report on open standards for modeling!
Need verbiage to persuade the head of dept / CEO / dean / etc.
"not another meta/open modeling initiative" (vhs vs. betamax) (need momentum/buy-in)
Enhancement proposals: example of PEP in Python; lengthy process of analysis. See how they do it in these open-source communities. (i.e., open-source communities as models). Process of working through online documents asychronously.
Incentives for ECR includes networking & visibility, but has to be something they can take back to annual report & have value.
Sometimes ECR are shy to engage; have an organization/activities specifically for ECR folks; student chapter; educational program.
Some support would help for group leaders. Research orgs are project funded, so this is especially important. Keep work lightweight.
