Model List in chat window not updating

When I make changes to remote or local models, the model list in the chat window is not updating. I tried opening a new window, as well as restarting the app. I am running SAM 20260217.1 on Tahoe 26.2 (M1 MBA).

I just learned about SAM in your Reddit announcement post and giving it a whirl. Thanks!

Hi! Can you send me a screenshot of what you're seeing? Both the model picker, and the models that you have installed. There might be something wrong with the model registry, you can try deleting it: ~/Library/Caches/sam/models/.managed/model_registry.json

It will regenerate the next time SAM is started. If it's not that, it could be something with caching. Once I have your model configuration I'll try and recreate the issue.

Okay- 'Model List' is the first screenshot showing the remote provider list. I only had Qwen3 Coder Next at this point. Then 'Model Picker' shows a chat screen, the only available choice was a local model I had previously downloaded and deleted. The Qwen2 Coder Next model is not in the picker list.

I then deleted the 'model_registry.json' file, but it actually didn't change anything upon relaunching the app.

I then deleted the app with Appcleaner app to try to do a clean uninstall, then reinstalled. 'After Reinstall' shows the result- the correct model is now in the model picker, but when I give it a 'Hello' prompt there is no response. I hear the sound notification but then that's it, no apparent activity.

Ahh, it looks like you're trying to use OpenAI for Qwen? You should install Qwen3 Coder via the Local Models preference, I don't think it's available from OpenAI.

Your base URL should be https://openrouter.ai/api/v1 for OpenRouter.

Oops- silly me! I had deleted everything to try to start from scratch.

I fixed that, attached is the current set up screen. The model shows up in the chat window, but when I enter a prompt same result- the prompt is there, but no reply. Reviewing my OpenRouter log, I don't see any requests received from the app.

It looks like it found models, if you don't set one and just fetch all of them, do any work? I'll try and recreate this when I have some time.

I found and resolved some issues with this, and added OpenRouter as a provider as well. You should see an update with the fixes in a few hours. :)

There must have been some corrupted files, when I first installed the new update I still wasn't getting any responses to prompts. I went to the ~/Library/Caches/sam/ folder and deleted the entire /sam folder. I then restarted the app and got the actual welcome screen asking if I wanted to set up a local or cloud model, after that it was smooth sailing.
I really like all the ideas and features you have put into SAM and CLIO and am looking forward to giving them a proper spin.

I think I have figured out what is actually triggering the issue. I am using SAM 20260220.2 on Tahoe 26.2.
I can successfully set up remote provider with my OpenRouter API key, fetch models, modify the list to only include the model choices I want, and successfully chat with the model.
However, if I close the chat window (cmd-W) or quit the app, the app seems to hit some sort of error state:

• If I quit the app right after successful set up, upon restart the chat interface appears, but I do not get prompt responses. I actually get the notification sound immediately after sending the prompt, normally the notification sound comes only after the model responds. The model selection drop down box does not respond either, no list appears.

• If I instead close the chat window after successfully setting up and confirming I get successful replies to prompts, I appear to reach an error state (perhaps the same one.) Ttrying to start a new chat does not bring back the chat window. I cannot open the Preferences either. I quit the app and restart and then am in the same state as above- the chat interface appears, but I do not get prompt responses. The model selection drop down box does not respond either, no list appears.

To reset everything, I am using an app called 'AppCleaner' to delete all the app's working and preference files.

Oh man, you are so right- thanks for telling me that! I edited the log above to strip personal info.

I actually didn't remove any models from the list- this was after a brand new setup where I fetched all the models and didn't prune the list. I will try setting up as new and fetching the list, then restarting the app, and THEN sending a first message.

But my recollection is that once the bugginess appeared, nothing I did fixed the problem- re-fetching the list, etc.

This time I made sure to reinstall from scratch, fetched the models, prompted and got a successful response. Then quit and restarted the app, and am getting that error again with the misconfiguration:

Thanks for checking and your time. I'll mess around and try again later, try different models, etc. I do have an Anthropic API key as well, can see if that works fine for me as a test.

It's unfortunate that we couldn't resolve it, if you're up for it you can always add CLIO and see if CLIO can debug it using your live log, your API key, and the SAM sources. That's a lot more effort, and would need a very capable model - but it could be fun. :)
