Class Definitions - php vs json vs yaml

Are class files still required to be defined as php files or can they be checked in as either yaml or json?

Currently everything else has moved to yaml which can easily be converted to from the exported json files. Class files still export as json but if they mist be php files when checked in makes it hard to convert:
