How can a task be started without a defer?

I feel like I usually hack around this, but is there a simple way to start a task without using a request.defer or task.defer?

I suppose I work my way backwards from task.defer to see what's feasible.

does task.call do it? or does that lead to the same question?

I can't actually tell and its a little difficult to test. Task.call returns itself, but it doesn't look like its being added to the event loop anywhere, so I don't imagine the task will complete (or if the task runs, it will block).

Regardless, I hacked around my current issue, but an example of this would be nice at some point. Then again, I guess we are deprecating the Task thing, so you can decide whether or not to close this issue.
