When an image uses uniform fill, it is centered. On vertical monitors, this can crop important areas, since most photos are horizontal. The user loses control over which part of the image is displayed.
With alignment, it would be possible to manually adjust the visible framing, highlighting the desired area. This avoids unwanted cropping and improves screen usage, especially when the image’s focus is not centered.
