Engineering Assessment — DocuQuery v1.0.0

Date: 2026-03-05 Scope: Full-stack technical audit — security, code quality, testing, infrastructure

This document is an honest self-assessment. It shows what's production-ready, what needs work, and the exact plan to get there. Writing this is part of the engineering process — shipping code you can't audit is shipping code you don't understand.


What's Done Well

Area Evidence
Consistent API contract Every endpoint returns {data, error, meta} — no shape surprises
Async throughout SQLAlchemy async + FastAPI async routes — no blocking on DB or LLM
Type safety Strict mypy (Python), strict TypeScript, zero any types
Auth system JWT access/refresh, bcrypt hashing, protected routes with dependency injection
Clean separation Route handlers are thin; all business logic in services/ — testable, swappable
Structured LLM output JSON mode + Pydantic validation — no brittle regex parsing
Dark mode next-themes + useSyncExternalStore — no hydration flash
Real E2E coverage 10 Playwright tests pass against the deployed app, not just localhost
No dead code Zero console.logs, TODOs, or commented-out blocks

Known Gaps & Planned Fixes

Security (v1.1 Priority)

Summary

DocuQuery v1.0 is a well-structured, fully typed, tested full-stack application with clean architecture and working deployment. The security and scalability gaps are documented, scoped, and have concrete fix plans — not handwaved.

The codebase demonstrates: async Python, structured LLM integration, service layer patterns, modern React (hooks, App Router, server components), comprehensive testing (unit + integration + E2E), and infrastructure automation (Docker, CI, cloud deploy).

What separates this from a tutorial project: it works end-to-end in production, it has real tests that pass against the deployed app, and this assessment exists.
