Ran into the same issue on CentOS 8, but was able to fix by making 2 changes:

• modified script on my computer from {{.State.Health.Status}} to {{json .State.Health}}
• removed virtual bridge network from QEMU/KVM as this uses port 53 for DNS resolutions to and from virtual machines. I wasn't using this, so I went ahead and removed.

Re-ran script and now pi-hole is running strong!

same issue on this with ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 20.04 and 20.10. Tried all 3 and even tried an 8GB Pi with Raspbian. Looking for the source code for the network.py file.

you have to stop and disable the resolved service on Ubuntu since it is already using port 53 by default. The below commands will stop and disable. Then you want to edit the resolv.conf file and add a static dns server in order for the install to work...ie 8.8.8.8 (google)

sudo systemctl stop systemd-resolved.service
sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved.service

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

network.py file:

Thank you for the reply. I actually have 2 piholes running, without using Docker. I was trying to download the docker file simply to get the network.py file and thanks to you, I have that file.

Not to sound dumb or anything, but trying to run this, I get an error when running this script on two different systems, Macbook Pro and Linode Ubuntu 18.04.

Ubuntu error: Syntax error: invalid syntax on 'if name == "main":
Mac error: NameError: name 'name' is not defined. What name is it looking for here?

I am honestly new to python but I believe that you need to install Flask for that error message.

I used pip to install it personally:

install pip3
install flask with pip3

@bryanwills were you ever able to figure this out? I'm trying to run the network.py script on a raspberry pi4 and running into all sorts of errors, names not being defined and indentation errors.

Using this identically(copy and paste) throws errors:

First, stop the process which is running on port 53. To find it you can use netstat
netstat -tulpn|grep 53
Second, simply change pihole.sh in line 20 from
{{.State.Health.Status}}
to
{{.State.Health}}
Tested with Ubuntu 20.4 and it worked.

Alas, even with the webserver running, I'm now having an issue getting it to work over a browser. I'm getting a 404 error, like it can't find the path for the block script. Hmmm....
