use the provisioning interface rather than the primary interface

Adding a host to icinga via the foreman configuration is a breeze. At the moment the primary interface information is sent to icinga2. It would be nice if I could select the provisioning interface instead, since I use that interface as my management interface.

That sounds like a great solution indeed. Everybody has their own specific setup and your proposal sounds like it supports maximum flexibility.
