Feature Request: Enhancing Video2Commons with Scheduled Uploads

We propose a valuable enhancement to Video2Commons: the ability to schedule uploads. This feature would significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of transferring media to Wikimedia Commons.

Why Scheduled Uploads Matter:

  1. Timely Public Domain Releases: Many works enter the public domain on specific dates, often January 1st. By scheduling uploads for the exact moment of public domain entry, we can ensure immediate availability on Wikimedia Commons, maximizing their impact.
  2. Optimized Server Load: Large-scale uploads can strain server resources. Scheduling uploads in batches or at specific times can distribute the load and prevent potential server overload, leading to a smoother and more efficient upload process.

Proposed Implementation:

  • User-Friendly Interface: A simple and intuitive interface to allow users to set up scheduled uploads, including date, time, and specific media files.
  • Reliable Scheduling Mechanism: A robust scheduling mechanism, such as a Cron job or task scheduler, to trigger uploads at the designated time.
  • Informative Notifications: A notification system to keep users informed about the status of scheduled uploads, including success, failure, or any issues encountered.

By implementing scheduled uploads, Video2Commons can become an even more powerful tool for managing large-scale media transfers and time-sensitive releases. We believe this feature would be greatly appreciated by the Wikimedia community.
