How is a document initially loaded

Hi, I'm trying to understand how this reader works, but I'm fairly new to coding and don't quite understand.  I'm specifically trying to figure out if an entire document and its pages are loaded into memory, or if pages are loaded on demand, lazily.  Thanks for any information, and I appreciate your project.
