Testing out {mapgl} in webr; basemap style doesn't render

Hi Kyle, I am trying to test out if I can make {mapgl} package work to create a serverless shiny app using webr and shinylive. However, I noted that the base map style does not render, i.e. the globe renders as blank canvas. Alternatively I tried style = "https://tiles.openfreemap.org/styles/liberty", the base map works at a higher zoom level, but the same thing happens in the lower zoom level.

I couldn't figure out the root of the problem or a solution so I am posting here in a hope that you can lead me to the correct direction.

Note

I installed {mapgl} from r-universe because the {mapgl} package in r-wasm repo hasnt been updated to the latest {mapgl} version and doesn't support functions such as add_globe_control().

I've never gotten mapgl to work in webr myself. I'll take a look!

I'm not sure webr is set up for packages like mapgl that need to make external requests (e.g. to a map tile server). I notice that leaflet() |> addTiles() doesn't work either, and I can't download data with tigris in webr. so it might just not be the right tool for the job (though happy to be corrected)

Thanks for your kind response. I read through the same documentation and that is what I understood as well.

However when I used the openfreemap tile layer, I got it working to some extent (please see the screenshot below). After seeing it work partially, I got my hopes up.
