State of freetype2 branch

This branch is fairly old and does not build at the moment, do you think it can be integrated with the current development? Would it still support the conversion of OTF files?

I might take a look, I just wanted to double-check if you think it's worth the effort at all.

I don't remember much about this, sorry. I think it's worth taking a look. I believe the reason it never was merged had to do with the difficulty in figuring out how specify licensing for included libraries in a CRAN release, but that was before I had experience doing that with Shiny and other packages -- today that wouldn't be a barrier for me.
