Hello, thank you for the contribution! Unfortunately, any time we've looked over Chinese-character-based localizations in the past it appeared that it would involve replacing Japanese characters in the font(s) we include with the game, which we don't want to do out of respect for the series' origin. Would this just involve adding characters to the existing font, or would some need to be replaced?

Unfortunately font need to be replaced, I think some code changes in main game is required, I can do the work if it is possible !

Unfortunately we are not making new releases of the game at this time as development of version 2.0 is happening on a separate (private) branch. I will however review the viability of including Chinese localizations when we get to that stage of development (we're working with some different fonts now) and I'll try to reach out to you then if it looks possible.

Ok! I'm also a experienced C / GML programmer, I can also help if any Chinese language related programming work needed 👍

Yes! We're using Fusion Pixel both 8px and 12px versions for a lot of the text in 2.0. We're also still using Acknowledge for some of the smaller menu elements, but those should be the only two fonts we are using.

Would it be possible to use 10px in 2.0? 8px makes Traditional Chinese feel a bit too tight — it’s still readable, but not very comfortable to read. Maybe consider using multiple fonts to improve legibility?

For reference, the size of Simplified Chinese pixel font should be at least 12px to make sure that the font is very easy for Chinese players to read.
That's why so many Simplified Chinese fan translations of NES/SNES/GB/GBA/NDS games would replace 8px and 10px fonts with 12px font when it's possible.

About official Simplified Chinese version of Zero Mission and Fusion by iQue, they also replaced those fonts with 12px ones.

So back in 2017, I followed this widely accepted rule and replaced all fonts with 12px ones for the best readability when I made Simplified Chinese version AM2R 1.1. However, after 8 years, I have no memory how I did this at that time...

So I wonder if it's possible that 2.0 can adjust the UI layout and size/scale for specific languages to solve this issue.
I also wonder if it's possible to use different fonts for different languages, for example, to solve a classic CJK issue, that some hanzi/kanji share same code point, but they have different glyph shapes depending on regions

2.0 is unfortunately really tight on menu screen space, but when we get to our localization pass I will see if it seems possible to use a larger font. 12px is probably just not doable for some things like the inventory screen, but we may be able to sneak in 10px somewhere.
