A lightweight Python script demonstrating the extreme sensitivity of stellar carbon production (via the triple-alpha process and the Hoyle state resonance) to very small variations in nuclear resonance energy. This illustrates one of the classic examples of fine-tuning in astrophysics and nuclear physics relevant to the cosmic abundance of carbon and oxygen—elements essential for life.
The triple-alpha process converts helium into carbon in stars through a narrow resonance (the Hoyle state). Peer-reviewed studies show that shifts of just ~0.5% in this resonance energy can drastically reduce or explode carbon yields, affecting the cosmic C/O ratio. This demo exaggerates the effect slightly for clarity but faithfully captures the qualitative asymmetry.

Customization
Adjust the exponent -1000 in the script to make the sensitivity more or less dramatic.
Lower values (e.g., -100 to -300) bring it closer to realistic Hoyle-state sensitivity while remaining illustrative.
