The biggest change from this is that the board supports the QMK firmware. This offers a huge amount of customization and utility so that this can also be repurposed as a general purpose macro pad. QMK is frequently used with Ergodox keyboards (I use it for mine) and would allow easier modification from just the Arduino code. The Arduino code has also been updated to stay compatible.
