Tags
Tags are keywords that can be associated to topics to organize them. While the Community Forums and DNN searches across the title and body of topics, having tags allows for special emphasis on particular keywords.
Note that Tags are defined across the module and are not specific to individual forums or forum groups.
As shown below, tags:
- can be entered into both the originating post and any subsequent replies
- from the originating post and subsequent replies are gathered together and associated with the topic and are then available in Community Forums and DNN search.
To enter a tag in a post, press the # key, and enter your tag (without any spaces). If existing tags exist that match yours, you will be presented with a dropdown list from which to select:
Additionally, if the posting user has "Tag" permission and enters a new #tag that is not known, it will be added to the list of tags available across the module.
Once you submit your post, the tag will now include a link to the Community Forums search page for that tag (more on that below):
Users with "Tag" permission on the topic's forum (see below) can further edit the tags associated with the topic.
Tags are currently powered by some custom plugins for the CKEditor4 HTML editor provided with DNN. We have a new editor option that allows you to select this editor instead of the default DNN editor.
This editor option is now the default for a new installation, and if you are upgrading, and it was previously set to Default DNN Editor, it will change to the new DNN CKEditor4 plus Forums plugins option.
In the control panel, there is now a feature setting that lets you select the "editor" for each forum, forum group, or default for the module (remember that you can have forums inherit from groups, and groups inherit from module defaults, so you might only need to set this for the module defaults and it will flow downward):
Two aspects of security are related to tags:
- First, any user with "Edit" permission can use tags when creating a post, whether it is a new topic, or replying to an existing topic.
- Second, any user with "Tag" permission has two additional features:
- As explained above, any time they enter a new #tag that is not known, it will be added to the list of tags available across the module
- In addition, users with "Tag" permission also see an additional panel on the topic itself, where they can also add/remove tags:
Users with Administrator access to the Community Forums Control Panel can manage tags that are available across the module:
To add or edit a tag, just type in the keyword, change the tag name and click Save. This will change the name of the tag across all forums / topics in which it is used. If you delete a tag, it will be deleted from the associated topic (although the original content of the post itself will not change).
