This release marks the final updated version of the EDS 240: Data Visualization & Communication course website as it was taught in Winter 2025.

Updates

While topics covered remained largely the same as in Winter 2024, there are a number of important updates, which include:

  • the restructuring of weekly pages to include consistent sections, for predictability / ease of finding content
  • the addition of template files & keys, which complement lecture slides, to facilitate in-class live-coding exercises
  • the addition of discussion slides, instructions, and keys
  • new class content on using Affinity Designer for building infographics, led by Dr. Alex Phillips; this was an attendance-optional make up class due to lecture falling on a holiday
  • the addition of an organized final project showcase, which took place during finals week
  • new / revised homework assignments
  • general refactoring of code to improve clarity and to align with latest package releases / best practices, as necessary
  • reorganization of some content for improved flow of ideas / topics

Accessing data

Data sets used throughout lecture and discussion materials, as well as in homework assignments do not live in this repository. Many are read in directly from online repositories / using APIs (key required), though hard copies exist on Google Drive. You can find links to downloadable versions of these data in on our wiki.

Winter 2024 course website (EDS 240)

This is very first release(!) of the EDS 240 - Data Visualization & Communication course website, created while teaching this course for the first time in Winter 2024. The website is built using Quarto and hosted with GitHub Pages. All necessary website files live in this repository :)

Future versions of the course website will continue to be updated at the existing URL: https://samanthacsik.github.io/EDS-240-data-viz/ https://eds-240-data-viz.github.io/ (UPDATE: September 2024; the course website repository now lives inside the EDS-240-Data-Viz organization, and the URL is updated as a result)
