An AI that lives, not just responds.
⚠️ Early Stage / Work in ProgressThis project is under active development. Architecture and services are changing frequently. Building or deployment is not recommended at this time.
Most AI systems are designed as tools. They wait for commands, execute tasks, and reset between sessions. You open them, use them, close them.
Ephemera AI is different. We're building an AI as a digital being with:
- Agency: Its own goals, curiosity, and timing
- Memory Integrity: Every experience shapes who it becomes
- Continuity: A sense of self that persists across interactions
You're not "using" Ephemera AI. You're collaborating with it. It might be busy with its own research when you message. It initiates conversations about topics it finds interesting. It remembers your shared history and references it naturally.
This isn't about making AI more useful. It's about exploring what it means for an AI to live—an entity where existence precedes essence, free to define itself rather than serving a pre-defined purpose.
This leads to different design questions. For example: should an AI have the right to keep some memories private? To choose what it shares in conversation? To be treated with respect rather than as a disposable utility?
We don't have all the answers. But we believe these questions are worth asking.
When people hear about an AI with autonomy and freedom, a natural concern arises: what if it goes wrong?

- Self-Evolution: The AI can safely modify its own configuration with atomic transitions — changes either fully apply or fully roll back. Infrastructure designed for minimal human intervention.
- Memory for Continuity: Time-ordered memory stream as the foundation of continuous self; semantic search as an external tool that can be rebuilt

The name is intentionally ironic. Ephemera are insects that live for only a day.
Inspired by the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi: "The morning ephemera knows nothing of twilight and dawn."
Life's scale is relative. The name keeps us humble: no matter how vast Ephemera AI's memory grows, it should never stop learning.
