### Press Release: Incorporation of InnerSource Commons Foundation

The InnerSource Commons Foundation (ISC) was incorporated on February 19th, 2020 and is taking steps to become a 501(c)(3) public charity.

The mission of the ISC is to establish a body of knowledge and to educate individuals, commercial and non-profit organizations, research centers, and other institutions about the successful adoption of InnerSource best practices. The ISC provides a safe environment for accumulating and sharing knowledge and experiences, finding best practices, building standards and tooling, producing educational materials, and fostering research to advance the understanding, adoption, and practice of InnerSource.

The entirety of the ISC is handled transparently and openly. To protect the identity of contributing individuals and organizations, discussions are held under the Chatham House Rule: Participants can share all learnings and insights, but must not attribute them unless the originator wishes so. Documentation, teaching materials, best practices patterns, and others are made available under open licenses that support this goal.

The initial board of directors is comprised of: Danese Cooper (as President), Georg Grütter (as Vice-President), Russell Rutledge (as Secretary), Cedric Williams (as Treasurer)
Silona Irene Bonewald, Maximilian Capraro, Daniel Izquierdo Cortázar, Isabel Drost-Fromm and Timothy H-J. Yao.

Future boards will be elected by the membership on a yearly basis. ISC initially is incorporated in the US. As the community grows, we anticipate to found sister organizations in the European Union, Latin America, and other parts of the world.

Membership in the InnerSource Commons foundation is purely merit-based, free of any cost, and restricted to individuals. Though there will not be any membership fees, the InnerSource Commons Foundation welcomes sponsor contributions. These are tax deductible in the US.

It is easy to get involved, learn about InnerSource and contribute to the InnerSource Commons: Check out https://innersourcecommons.org for more information!

The InnerSource Commons welcomes the [European Commission's new Open Source Software Strategy 2020-2023](https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/en_ec_open_source_strategy_2020-2023.pdf) highlighting how InnerSource (the creation of working cultures based on open source) is an integral part of a robust open source strategy and ecosystem. Teams adopting a culture of InnerSource can accelerate active open source corporate participation. We fully support the intention to set InnerSource as a default way of working in order to bring teams closer to open source working methods and to encourage sharing and reuse within the organisation. We agree that InnerSource can be instrumental to the success of this strategy.

"InnerSource is rapidly gaining momentum as a way to help developers on their path to open source. It can be a great tool to help break down silos, encourage collaboration and reuse of code, and to identify opportunities to contribute software back to the open source world. We welcome the European Commission's decision to adopt and promote InnerSource. We hope the community-created resources from the InnerSource Commons community will aid the Commission in their implementation of this strategy, and we look forward to learning from the Commission about their own best practices." said Danese Cooper, President of InnerSource Commons.

### InnerSource Commons to Further Collaboration Within Fintech Organizations

We are delighted that to announce that InnerSource Commons is now an associate member of FINOS, the Fintech Open Source Foundation.

"Our business model has always been based on the notion that it's essential to build a diverse community of members, technologists, consultants and developers for us to succeed," said Gabriele Columbro, executive director of FINOS.

InnerSource Commons will work with FINOS to promote and document best practices for implementing InnerSource within financial organizations. We initiated the InnerSource Special Interest Group (SIG) with FINOS, which gathers industry professionals within the community who wish to accelerate their InnerSource implementations. The InnerSource SIG is led by InnerSource Commons and executives from several large financial institutions, including Deutsche Bank, Capital One, Morgan Stanley and RBC.

"With FINOS, we look to support financial services organizations in their InnerSource journey. It can reduce bottlenecks, enable internal collaboration and innovation, accelerate new engineer on-boarding, and identify opportunities to create efficiencies within organizations," said Danese Cooper, Founder and President of InnerSource Commons. "We look forward to accomplishing great things and are excited to contribute to the open source movement that FINOS is building in financial services with leading technology-centered organizations of every stripe."

InnerSource Commons, the world's largest community of InnerSource practitioners, today announced seven new Partners and Supporters at the launch of their new Sponsorship Program. Their first official partners are Bitergia, GitHub and Microsoft. New Supporters include Comcast, Europace, Indeed and Grupo Santander.

"InnerSource has seen massive growth in the last few years, both as a step to open source readiness and a way to increase developer productivity and innovation. It is simply the best way to develop software. We are so grateful to our first InnerSource Commons Partners and Supporters. With their help, we can scale the great work this community has been doing since 2015 for even bigger impact." said Danese Cooper, Founder and Chair of InnerSource Commons.

“There are two ways to sponsor InnerSource Commons.” explained Isabel Drost-Fromm, President of InnerSource Commons, “Our Partner Program is for organizations helping to lead the InnerSource movement in the world and our Supporter Program is suitable for those organizations who have not just adopted InnerSource internally, but care about enabling the worldwide community of practitioners.”

More information about the InnerSource Commons Partner and Support programs can be found at www.innersourcecommons.org/about/sponsors/.

### From Our New Partners and Supporters

“Bitergia is excited to partner with the InnerSource Commons for its next phase of growth. We have been involved with the InnerSource Commons since it was founded in 2015, as Bitergia values the community's contribution to spreading knowledge about the use of open source best practices, which is positioned to become the default way to develop software." said Daniel Izquierdo Cortázar, CEO of Bitergia.

“At GitHub we help companies across the world continuously improve how their engineering teams work together on code. Getting started in nurturing an InnerSource culture of sharing can be challenging, which is why we have been strong supporters of InnerSource Commons from day one.’ said Martin Woodward, Senior Director of Developer Relations at GitHub.

‘The InnerSource Commons is a unique group of people who come together from all across the industry to share their experiences on adopting techniques from open source and applying them inside their enterprise. You get to collaborate with people who are responsible for building internal communities of best practice and sharing amongst some of the top performing software development groups in the business.” he said.

"Microsoft is committed to helping individuals and organizations achieve more and an important part of this is making sure that we can all contribute to the work of others and build on the work of others. While many of us are already doing this externally through open source, we also think it's important to make sure organizations have tools and processes to do this within their organizations as well with InnerSource best practices." said Arno Mihm, Principal Program Manager, Open Source Programs Office, Microsoft.

"InnerSource has accelerated open source collaborative practices within Comcast, and is a key strategy within our Open Source Program Office. We are long-time participants in the InnerSource Commons community and are delighted to support them in the work they do." said Nithya Ruff, Head of Open Source, Comcast Cable.

"We have adopted InnerSource in Grupo Santander as a new way to scale collaboration across the organization, with the goal of being more effective in code reuse in our software production chain. Becoming a Supporter of InnerSource Commons allows us to work even more closely with global leaders in this space." said Jesus Alonso Gutiérrez, Head of European InnerSource Office, Grupo Santander.

The Internet, October 19th, 2021

The InnerSource Commons Foundation (ISC), the world's foremost community for InnerSource practitioners, today announced Clare Dillon as Executive Director. InnerSource is the use of open source best practices for software development within the confines of an organization. The mission of the ISC is to establish a body of knowledge and to educate individuals and organizations about the successful adoption of InnerSource best practices. Founded in 2015, the ISC supports and connects hundreds of companies, academic institutions, and government agencies.

Clare is stepping into the role of Executive Director after a long career in the technology industry, having spent over 20 years working with developers and developer communities. Clare has been involved with InnerSource Commons since early 2019, when she helped set up NearForm's InnerSource practice. Before that, Clare was a member of Microsoft Ireland Leadership Team, heading up their Developer Evangelism and Experience Group. Clare has also served as a director on numerous boards.

"We are excited to have Clare Dillon join our team to help bring InnerSource Commons to the next stage of its journey." said Isabel Drost-Fromm, President of the InnerSource Commons. "InnerSource helps organizations experience the benefits of using open source methods: reducing bottle-necks, increasing efficiencies and creating happier developers. Open source sustainability is a major challenge in today's world. InnerSource also increases the number of individuals ready to address that challenge. InnerSource Commons has grown significantly in the last 5 years as we support the ever-increasing community of InnerSource practitioners. We see huge potential to have an even bigger impact in the community."

"InnerSource Commons provides a safe space for individuals to come together to share InnerSource knowledge and experiences, find best practices and research to accelerate the understanding, adoption, and practice of InnerSource. Having participated in this community for some time, I can say that it not only does amazing work, it is also a group that is a pleasure to work with." said Clare Dillon "I am looking forward to working more closely with the board and community to help grow the Commons and spread the word about how InnerSource can improve collaboration and pave the way to more sustainable development practices."

The Internet, November 19th, 2021

2021 has been a significant year for InnerSource Commons. With over 50 active contributors across the 3 working groups, the community has significantly increased its activity and achieved some amazing results.

The Patterns working group added 13 new Level 1 patterns and 2 new Level 2 patterns throughout the year. The Learning Path working group added a total of 12 new translations for the videos and workbooks introducing the most important roles of InnerSource. The marketing group kickstarted many new programmes and activities this year such as the creation of a new website, community calls, partnerships with other organizations and a sponsorship programme.

Throughout these activities, we have seen 3 people shine and contribute above and beyond to our community. With this in mind, during the InnerSource Summit 2021, we started a new tradition in the InnerSource Commons: the Annual Outstanding Contributor award.

This year’s award is going to:
- **Dmitrii Sugrobov** for his consistent contribution to the Marketing and Outreach group and the Learning Path working group as well as for leading the development of our new website and for his involvement in the online summits.
- **Sebastian Spier** for his consistent contributions in all our working groups as well as leading the Patters group and being actively present in our 1-1 virtual coffee sessions.
- **Fei Wan**, who is also contributing to multiple working groups and has made an especially valuable contribution to the Patterns group: the patterns map which makes our collection of patterns much more accessible than it was before.

We would like to extend a massive thank you to the 3 exceptional contributors to our community and officially recognise them as the InnerSource Commons 2021 Outstanding Contributors. Hats off to you all!
