You will find all the files needed to run the application on your Windows system. Choose the latest release to get the newest features and fixes.
To use CommitLedger, your computer should meet these basic requirements:
- Windows 10 or later (64-bit recommended)
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- 100 MB free disk space for installation
- Internet connection to access your GitHub data
- A web browser (any modern browser will work)
CommitLedger runs locally, so no other software or services are needed unless you want to sync new data from GitHub.
Follow these steps to download and start using CommitLedger on Windows. This guide assumes you have basic knowledge of clicking and opening files.
- Open your web browser.
- Go to the CommitLedger Releases page.
- Find the latest release. Usually, it is at the top of the page and marked with the most recent date.
- Under "Assets," click the file that ends with
.exe– this is the installer for Windows.
Save this file somewhere easy to find, like your Desktop or Downloads folder.
- Locate the
.exefile you downloaded. - Double-click the file to open the installer.
- Follow the prompts on the setup window:
- Click Next to continue
- Choose the install location or use the default path
- Click Install to start installing
- Wait a moment while the software installs.
- When finished, click Finish to close the installer.
- After installation, look for the CommitLedger icon on your Desktop or in the Start menu.
- Click the icon to open the application.
CommitLedger will show a simple user interface where you can connect your GitHub account and start generating reports.
CommitLedger needs to access your GitHub commit history. You will follow a few simple steps to allow this.
- In CommitLedger, click the Connect GitHub button.
- A new browser window will open, asking you to sign in to your GitHub account.
- Log in using your GitHub username and password.
- Grant CommitLedger permission to view your public commit history. CommitLedger will NOT change or delete any data.
- After authorization, return to the CommitLedger app. You should see your connected GitHub username on screen.
Your commit data will now be ready to use.
Once your GitHub is connected, you can generate a report of your commits. Here’s how:
- From the main screen, select the repository you want to track.
- Choose the date range for the report (e.g., last week, last month).
- Click Generate Report.
CommitLedger will collect your commit history for the chosen repository and date range. It will then produce a clear, easy-to-read log showing:
- Date and time of each commit
- Commit message describing the change
- Total number of commits during the period
- Summary grouped by day or week
You can preview the report on screen.
To share or keep your reports, you can save them as files.
- Click the Export button after generating the report.
- Choose the export format: PDF, Word document (.docx), or plain text.
- Select where to save the file on your computer.
- Click Save.
The saved report can be emailed, printed, or uploaded anywhere you need it.
CommitLedger offers a few settings to customize your experience:
- Default repository: Choose which project opens first.
- Report format: Set your preferred export file type.
- Date display format: Select how dates appear (e.g., MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY).
- Refresh interval: Set how often CommitLedger checks for new commits when connected.
You can find these options in the Settings menu inside the app.
If you encounter problems, try these steps:
- If the app won’t open, restart your computer and try again.
- Make sure you downloaded the latest version from the Releases page.
- If you can’t connect to GitHub, check your internet connection and login details.
- Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software might block CommitLedger. Allow permission if prompted.
- If report generation is empty, confirm the repository contains commits in your chosen date range.
- CommitLedger syncs only public GitHub commits. Private repositories require special permission and are not supported yet.
- Keep your app updated by checking the Releases page regularly. New versions fix issues and add improvements.
- Use the exported reports as proof of your work when submitting to employers or clients.
- Try different date ranges to analyze your work patterns over time.
