Normally, the ThinQ App communicates only with LG's cloud services (I haven't investigated this part).
During device setup, the app connects to a SoftAP exposed by the wi-fi module and communicates with a special setup protocol. The app provides the Wi-Fi credentials and other information to the module. After this setup (or "provisioning") is completed, the module stores the information in persistent memory and communicates with the cloud exclusively (no listening ports are opened) until the user resets the module using an appliance-specific sequence.
LG ThinQ is likely a registered trademark, or whatever, I don't care. The name is used here for identification purposes only. I'm not in any way affiliated with LG.
