Ive noticed a lot of people on mastodon have heard about and use this tool, but I've seen three seperate instances of people complaining that they have to re-follow every user they followed previously! I think that announcing this related mastodon feature here would help spread awareness of this very effectively, but I can understand if you dont think this is the right place for that.

I like this but I'm not a fan of the way it's worded, seems a bit curt, and "friendly reminder" has picked up some negative connotations with how often it's used passive-aggressively :(

I'd prefer something casual but polite and a bit more detailed, like

By the way, did you know you can copy the people you follow to your new account? Look for Data export on your old account and Import on the new one.

I wish we could link directly to the appropriate settings pages but unfortunately we

  • don't know the destination instance
  • don't even know for sure whether either instance is mastodon or just implements the mastodon api (pleroma) in which case the settings pages are different

I added some links. Feel free to change the code style or wording or whatever. I could not find a way to link to the export section of pleroma's user settings pages. I also could link directly to the following.csv files on mastodon, but then the user might not notice they can migrate their blocks as well. I also could not figure out how to determine if the host is http or https.

thank you for your changes :)

i believe mastodon won't federate with instances unless they're available over https so it's safe to assume they're all https

will test when i can
