Contents

Face Shape Detectors

Tools that classify your face shape (oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong) from a photo.

  • The Face Report — Face Shape Detector - Maps 478 facial landmarks using MediaPipe Face Mesh to classify face shape. Includes hairstyle recommendations. No login, browser-only processing.
  • PinkMirror - AI face analyzer rating 51 features across 12 facial areas. Detects face shape from 9 types.
  • YouCam Face Shape Detector - PerfectCorp's free AI face shape detector with hairstyle recommendations.
  • Detect-Face-Shape.com - Classifies into 6 face shapes: oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond.
  • FaceShapeDetector.ai - Free AI face shape analyzer covering face shape, eye shape, size, and spacing.

Why Face Shape Matters

Your face shape affects which hairstyles, glasses frames, hats, and even makeup techniques will look best on you. The six most common shapes — oval, round, square, heart, diamond, and oblong — each have different dominant proportions. The goal isn't to "fix" your shape, but to work with it. Facial Symmetry Tools

Measure bilateral symmetry by comparing left and right sides of the face.

  • The Face Report — Symmetry Checker - Detects 478 landmarks, compares bilateral pairs, scores overall symmetry plus breakdown by eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw. 100% private — photos never leave your device.
  • Anaface - Mark 17 facial points to get geometry and ratio analysis. One of the oldest facial beauty scoring tools online.

About Facial Symmetry

Perfect symmetry doesn't exist in nature — and isn't necessarily more attractive. Research shows slight asymmetry is normal and often unnoticeable. Most people overestimate their own asymmetry due to the Mere Exposure Effect (seeing your mirror-flipped face feels "wrong"). How to improve facial symmetry →

Golden Ratio Calculators

Measure how facial proportions compare to the golden ratio (1.618:1).

The Science Behind It

Research Papers

Key Concepts

  • Facial Thirds — The face is divided into three roughly equal vertical zones: hairline to brow, brow to nose base, nose base to chin. Deviations from equal thirds contribute to perceived face shape.
  • Facial Fifths — The face is divided into five equal horizontal zones, each approximately one eye-width wide.
  • FWHR — Facial width-to-height ratio. Measured from cheekbone to cheekbone (width) vs. upper lip to brow (height). Studied extensively in social perception research.
  • Golden Ratio (Phi) — 1.618:1. When facial proportions approximate this ratio, faces are often perceived as more harmonious — though cultural standards and individual preference matter as much as math.
