Summary of Changes

Hello @gemini-cli-robot, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request introduces an important enhancement to the IdeClient by enabling it to utilize authentication tokens provided through environment variables. This change improves flexibility in how authentication credentials are sourced, making it easier to configure and deploy the client in various environments. The update includes robust testing to confirm the new behavior, ensuring reliable connections even when configuration files are not used for token provision.

Highlights

  • Environment Variable Support for Auth Token: The IdeClient now supports retrieving its authentication token from the GEMINI_CLI_IDE_AUTH_TOKEN environment variable, providing a fallback if the token is not specified in the connection configuration file.
  • New Test Case for Environment Variable Auth: A new test has been added to ide-client.test.ts to validate that the IdeClient successfully connects using an authentication token provided via an environment variable, especially when a configuration file is absent.
  • Test Environment Cleanup: The test suite's beforeEach hook now includes cleanup for the GEMINI_CLI_IDE_AUTH_TOKEN environment variable, ensuring isolated test runs and preventing side effects.

Code Review

This pull request introduces a patch to allow the IdeClient to use an authentication token from the GEMINI_CLI_IDE_AUTH_TOKEN environment variable as a fallback if it's not available in the IDE connection configuration file. However, this change introduces a high-severity security vulnerability. Storing the IDE authentication token in an environment variable risks exposing secrets, as an attacker with local access could steal the token, potentially leading to unauthorized file modifications and code execution. It is strongly recommended to avoid using environment variables for sensitive secrets.

security-high high

The introduction of reading the authentication token from the GEMINI_CLI_IDE_AUTH_TOKEN environment variable creates a security risk. Storing secrets in environment variables can expose them to other processes, potentially leading to token theft. A compromised token would allow an attacker to modify files in the workspace, creating a path to arbitrary code execution. It is strongly recommended to avoid using environment variables for sensitive data.
