According to the java.sql.Driver.connect() specification, drivers should return null instead of throwing an exception when they cannot accept a given URL. This allows DriverManager to iterate through all registered drivers until it finds one that can handle the URL.

Summary of Changes

Hello @keshavdandeva, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request refines the behavior of the BigQuery JDBC driver's connection mechanism. The primary goal is to ensure full compliance with the JDBC specification, which dictates that a Driver.connect() method should return null if it determines that it is unable to establish a connection with the given URL. This change improves the robustness and predictability of the driver when handling malformed or unsupported connection strings.

Highlights

  • JDBC Compliance: The connect() method in BigQueryDriver.java now returns null for invalid URLs, aligning with the JDBC specification, instead of throwing an IllegalArgumentException.
  • Test Updates: The corresponding unit test in BigQueryDriverTest.java has been updated to reflect this change, asserting that connect() returns null for invalid URLs.

Code Review

This pull request updates the BigQueryDriver.connect() method to align with the JDBC specification. Previously, it threw an IllegalArgumentException for invalid URLs. The change modifies this behavior to return null, which is the expected behavior for a JDBC driver that does not understand a given URL. The corresponding unit test has been updated to reflect this change. The changes are correct and improve compliance with the JDBC standard.
