Using SimFinger
SimFinger is simple and easy to use. Most of the functions can be found under the “Control” menu in the menubar.
Important: It is highly recommended that you enable “access for assistive devices” under the Univesal Access pane in System Preferences. If you are already using apps such as Quicksilver, MultiClutch, or LaunchBar, you most likely already have this enabled. SimFinger will warn you if this is disabled. Although some features will work without it being enabled, the ones that do not are labeled.
SimFinger gives the iPhone Simulator a more ‘3G-ish’ look. It should automatically re-position the simulator window to make it look seamless on top of one another. However, if for some reason it doesn’t, you can also reposition the simulator by selecting “Resposition iPhone Simulator Window” option under the Control menu. (This requires access for assistive devices to be enabled.)
SimFinger supports both portrait and landscape mode and will auto-adjust based on the orientation of the simulator.
SimFinger allows you to install the default Apple apps that come with 3.0. To do this, go to the Control menu and select “Install Fake Apps…” In order to see the changes, you will have to restart the iPhone Simulator (but not SimFinger).
Note: Sometimes you may not be able to install the fake apps. Until this is fixed in a future version of SimFinger, you will have to create a folder called “Applications” in the “~/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/User” directory.
You can currently add a badge number to each of the fake apps. To do this, simply launch the application and select a number in the picker at the bottom. To remove the badge number, select 0.
To remove the fake apps, select the “Reset Content and Settings…” under the “iPhone Simulator” menu in the simulator itself. However, this will remove all your other apps, as well as restore the time/carrier text. Also, you will need to create the “Applications” directory again as noted above. Hopefully, in a future version of SimFinger, there will be an option to only remove the fake apps.
SimFinger allows you to change the time and carrier text of the simulator. Under the Control menu, select either “Set Fake Carrier Text…” or “Set Fake Time Text…” depending on what you want to change.
To change the simulator time and carrier back to its defaults, select the “Restore Fake Carrier / Time Text…” under the Control menu in SimFinger.
- You most likely want to hide the dock. The default shortcut for this is -Option-D.
- Change the position of the fake apps to match the Apple “default” layout for either 2.x or 3.x (I personally prefer 2.x). After all, the idea is to make your screencast look as good as possible!

If you’re a developer, please fork and have fun with it! The code isn’t too complex and open-source projects really shine when the community gets involved :)
