handle was undef already, and has_handle only checks "exists" on the item, not "defined".
work on Perl 5.8 (use open() instead).

Right now tests are failing for this module on Perl 5.8. The last commit in this series fixes it. (The rest of the commits in this pull request have already been released, but I can't find any branch they're on other than mine.)
