Gas Mask

The gas mask is currently the best (and the only) defense to be conceived against the Bio-Virus. Reverse engineered from salvaged Combine technology, it allows the wearer to navigate through the most heavily contaminated areas without getting infected, for as long as filters can be provided.

Wearing a gas mask provides important benefits:

  • It makes you immune to airborne contagion from Contaminant Barrels, Contaminant Clouds, Viral Samples, infected entities, and Air Waste.
  • If you get infected, it prevents you from spreading the Bio-Virus to nearby entities. #FlattenTheCurve
  • It looks badass.

However, there are several problems with it too:

  • By default, the gas mask’s filter must be swapped out over time to remain functional. A clean filter will last for more than three minutes, but its lifespan will shorten while you’re exposed to contaminant gases. If the filter runs out, it can no longer protect you.
    • You can see your filter's durability and how many extra filters you have in the top left corner of your screen while wearing a mask, or with the chat command !cfilter. If there is nothing in the top left corner, then filters are set to have infinite durability.
  • The poor clearance of the mask’s eye holes limits the wearer’s peripheral vision, creating a dark overlay that covers the edges of the screen.
  • Your labored breathing is audible while you wear the mask, especially if you’ve been running or critically injured. The more damage you’ve taken, the less you can sprint without getting winded.

In addition, the gas mask and spare filters can be dropped and exchanged between players freely. Metropolice and Overwatch soldiers have similar, integrated gas masks in their helmets.

Gas masks operate through chat commands. Say these in text chat to activate them:

  • !gasmask: Don or doff your gas mask.
  • !dgasmask: Drop your gas mask.
  • !ufilter: Replace your gas mask filter. You must not be wearing your gas mask, and you must have at least one reserve filter.
  • !dfilter: Drop one of your filters.
  • !cfilter: Display how many filters you have, and the status of your gas mask's current filter if you have one.

If a player tries to pick up a gas mask when they already have one, it will be picked up like a physics prop.
